I based the story on an ancient Greek Island because Hercules and Xena were all the rage back then. The gruesomeness of the title was influenced by the original-and-not-suitable-for-children Grimm's Fairy Tales, which I had read the summer before and threw all my respect for Disney princes out of the window.
